The only way to describe my experience researching Colombia is— So many cultures! So little time! There are so many beautiful cultures, I was absolutely overwhelmed with possibilities. I decided to narrow it down to three to start with, because I could not choose just one!
The "folk dancer" inspired Colombian is wearing the national colors of the flag: yellow, blue, and red. With a ruffled full skirt, perfect for twirling, and pretty flowers in her hair.
The Misak or Guambiana Colombian is a little girl from one of the many indigenous peoples of Colombia. I am fascinated by the different mountain people of the world and feel the kinship in their cultural ways of life.
The Palenquera of Cartagena Colombia represents the women who sell fruit and are known for their multicolored clothing, and posing with bowls of fruit carried on their heads. They are an African Diaspora culture of Colombia.
So you see why I could not draw just one. And with that, I salute the rich cultural diversity of Colombia!

Hello, sorry it has been so long since I've posted. This spring I caught the gardening bug and planted new shrubs and flowers around our house. Now it is too hot for gardening so I'm back to the drawing board as it were.
Above is my Uzbek Matryoshka. Prints of her in various sizes and a downloadable coloring sheet are now available in my shop. While doing research for this illustration I came across many wonderful images on the web and made a board of them here.
As I've said before, my Matryoshka illustrations are original designs, my artistic interpretation, inspired by various cultures. They share common design elements to both unify the collection and to illustrate that all cultures, all peoples, have much in common. The design elements that reoccur are my own stylized drawings of a plum blossom, leaves, and swirls, etc. This week while visiting the Wake Forest University Museum of Anthropology's "Chinese Ceramics from the Changsha Kilns" exhibit I saw a piece of pottery with a plum blossom design. The tag reads, "The plum blossom (mei) is a symbol of beauty, virginity, courage and hope." I did not know the meaning of the symbol but I am pleased with it and find it quite fitting. :)
I am in the process of sketching my next culture / nationality a Kazakh Matryoshka. I hope to complete it in the next week or so.

Hello and happy new year to you! I spent January doing paperwork and I am so glad to be back to drawing. February is off to a good start and I've completed my first illustration of 2013 a Taiwanese Bride Matryoshka. I was super excited to draw her because my daughter agreed to pose for me. She was so sweet and helpful. I have drawn her many times and she is my favorite model. She also posed for my Chinese Hanfu and Tibetan Matryoshkas.

In my research for this illustration I found many wonderful images of Taiwanese brides and made a board of them here.
I am in love with the color combinations of the sky blue and cherry red in the traditional Taiwanese bridal dress. Also, the detail of the fabulous headdress was quite fun to draw. I hope you like her! Please visit my shop to see all the items I have featuring this illustration.

Hello! This week I bring you my Ndebele Matryoshka, another beautiful South African culture. The Ndebele culture is a feast of color and geometric shapes. So many wonderful design elements and adornments! I really enjoyed my research, learning about and drawing her. I hope you like her too! You can see some of my inspirations I found on the web and compiled on a board here. All items for my Ndebele Matryoshka are now available in my shop.
Two weeks ago I introduced you to my Xhosa Matryoshka my first South African matryoshka. In about another two weeks I'll complete my Zulu South African Matryoshka.
Next on my suggestions list is Miao of China. My daughter is Chinese American so I am hoping to get her to pose for it. I love to draw her so I am super excited!

Hello! I have had a couple of requests for my latest illustration, a Welsh Matryoshka. One friendly customer sent me helpful links (Always appreciated!) and we both believe the Welsh costume may have inspired Mother Goose of nursery rhymes. Also, while researching, I composed a board of images I found on the web here. I love their use of plaids, stripes and polka dots! I had to get my flower design in there somewhere, so I used it on the background. All the items for this illustration including prints, magnets, and a coloring sheet PDF are now available in my shop.
Next up, another of the South African cultures, Ndebele!

This is my Balinese Dancer Matryoshka (now available in my shop), another wonderful suggestion! While doing research for this illustration I came across the Rejang Dewa traditional dance costumes. I was inspired by these beautiful costumes complete with tall woven hats adorned with flowers (very different from anything I've drawn before) and the beautiful and graceful girls that wear them and perform the dance. I hope I did this wonderful culture and people justice. I thank you for your continued support and terrific suggestions and for the beautiful cultures we celebrate together. Mexican Matryoshka Sisters

As I mentioned in my last post when I was doing research for the much suggested Mexican Matryoshka, I was so inspired by the many regions that feature such beautiful, traditional dress that I decided to illustrate three! So here are my Mexican sister Matryoshka! Pictured above, the middle one is my Jalisico Mexican Dancer that I introduced you to in my last post. The girl on the left is from the Yucatan where the dresses are white with beautifully embroidered flowers. The girl on the right is wearing a black Tehuana dress from Oaxaca, again with embroidered flowers. The Mexican culture is so rich, I hope you like these Matryoshka, they are all now available in my shop. :)

My newest Matryoshka illustration is inspired by the Mexican Ballet Folklorico, the Jalisico dress traditionally associated with Mariachi dancers, adorned with brightly colored ribbons. While doing research for my Mexican Matryoshka illustration I found three different regional dresses I was very inspired by and I plan on drawing the other two as well. The other two regions are the Yucatan and Juchitan (in Oaxaca). Often when researching a culture I find many different groups and styles of dress. It can be quite hard to choose which one to draw. I usually try to draw the one most often associated with a particular country, as is this Mexican Ballet Folklorica. But this time I thought why draw only one? So if ever I draw a Matryoshka and you are interested in a different region please just let me know. The more the merrier! :)

This is my latest illustration, my German Bavarian Matryoshka. I have had several requests for a German and specifically a Bavarian Matryoshka. She is wearing a formal style of dress (dirndl) versus a folk/everyday look. I enjoy finding similarities between cultures and this is another silver coin, choker necklace, and apron wearing Matryoshka. I've also included my pencil sketch. As promised in my last post, my newest illustration- Thai Dancer Matryoshka! I drew a dancer because I was inspired by the hand positioning and all the gold adornments of the traditional dance costumes. Also, I couldn't resist adding another "Gold" girl to my collection. I think she would look splendid displayed along with my Cambodian Girl Matryoshka, don't you?

I'm realizing that many of my Matryoshka illustrations are inspired by traditional dance costumes but I haven't always labeled them as "Dancer", this was unintentional though. I may go back and rename some of them at some point.
