Croatian Lika Matryoshka

Hello! This is my new drawing inspired by folk dress from the Lika region of Croatia. She is now available in my shop as a brunette and a blond, in print form and as a downloadable coloring sheet. This is my third Croatian drawing. My first Croatian matryoshka wears a white dress with red detail and my Istrian a black apron. My next drawing will be inspired by the Slavonija region of Croatia whose traditional dress has quite a lot of beautiful details as well. As always, all of my matryoshka drawings are also available on merchandise in my zazzle shop. :)

Dominican Matryoshka

Hello! Summer is winding down and I don't mind because I love autumn! I can't wait for the beautiful autumn leaves here in North Carolina. I hope all is well with you. I would like to introduce you to my newest drawing, a Dominican Matryoshka! Prints in a variety of sizes and a coloring sheet (a printable to download) are now available in my shop. While doing research for this drawing I came across many images on the web and saved them to a pinterest board. Hello! I have a new drawing with two versions to choose from, a Sami with brown hair and one with blonde hair. Prints in a variety of sizes and a printable coloring sheet are now available in my Etsy shop and dot com. Merchandise such as cards, postcards, postage stamps, tote bags and phone cases are available in my zazzle shop.

I receive many suggestions of cultures to draw. Whenever I receive a suggestion I add it to my suggestions list (you can see it in the right hand column of my blog). I work almost exclusively from this list in the order I receive the suggestions. I have always looked forward to getting to this suggestion. I had known the Sami people for their reindeer herding and I'm a nut for Christmas. So you know, "The Reindeer People" I couldn't wait! Well, I hyped myself up about it for so many years that when I finally got to it. . . it was a little intimidating. Luckily one of my collectors who suggested I draw a Sami sent me images to inspire me and gave me some good direction. I really couldn't do this without you all. Ancient Greek Matryoshka

Hello! My latest drawing is an Ancient Greek. She is different from my previous matryoshka drawings in that she is my first profile view. I didn't have to draw her face in profile but many of the examples of ancient Greek artwork depict the profile view and I felt them most inspiring. Also, she is one of the few "ancient" cultural drawings I've done. My first ancient was my Roman Goddess Juno that I drew and blogged about back in 2011. Then in 2014 I drew and blogged about Queen Esther from the book of Esther in the Bible. Also, I see on my suggestions list that I'm four drawings away from drawing an Ancient Assyrian.

As I mentioned, I work from a list of suggestions I get from wonderful people like you from around the world. They contact me on my blog, through social media or through my shops. When I get a suggestion I put it on my list (located in the right hand column of my blog). I work on the list in the order I receive the suggestions. So far I've drawn over 100 cultures, and have over 30 suggestions waiting for me to draw at any given time. I've had so many suggestions it takes quite a while from the time I receive the suggestion to the time I actually get a chance to draw them. People have been remarkably patient and continue to send me suggestions along with photos of the cultures they request. Please, keep your suggestions coming and thank you for your support!

Two New Spaniard Matryoshkas

Souvenirs my Grandmother brought back from Spain.

Hello, and Happy Valentine's Day to you! I recently found myself looking again at some souvenirs my Grandmother brought back from Spain. I've loved these Flamenco dancers since I was a child: the dolls, fan, and embroidered postcards. I decided to photograph them to share with you some of the things from my childhood that first sparked my curiosity in cultures and ultimately would inspire my work as an adult.

My Grandpa Charles was in the US military and he, my Grandma and their daughters (the oldest is my mother) were stationed and traveled all over the world. Their home was filled with interesting items from their travels. Looking at these items from Spain I started to think, "I really should draw a couple more Flamenco dancers!" So I did, a pink dress version and a red dress version.

Tongan Matryoshka

Hello! This is my Tongan Matryoshka drawing in honor of the people of Tonga. Tonga is a Polynesian Kingdom in the southwest Pacific Ocean.

I find that when I begin drawing a new culture I notice similarities and parallels to cultures I've previously drawn. So I've made sub-categories in my head. For example, some cultures wear red beaded necklaces. I've been surprised how many! So when I start a drawing that includes a red beaded necklace I think, "Oh, its one of the 'Red Beaded' cultures." There are also "Apron Wearing" cultures, and "Fan" holding cultures. So when I started this one I thought, "Yay! A 'Fan culture'!" It was a really fun fan to draw too, figuring out how to capture the woven aspect and open areas. Some of my other "Fan" drawings are my Cambodian, Cuban, Queen Elizabeth I, and Filipina.

While doing research for this culture I came across many inspiring images on the web and pinned them here. Above is my preliminary design process with a pencil sketch and color design elements.

Matryoshka Makeovers

Spring is coming! Time to spruce up! It's time for Matryoshka makeovers. First off, my Pakistani Matryoshka has had a bit of a wardrobe change and is feeling beautiful!

Some of my other Matryoshka felt like it was time for a change too. My Irish Dancer now comes with black or light brown hair. My Serbian and Latvian now have brown or blond hair to choose from. My Scotswoman has had a day at the spa and her complexion is just glowing. My Portuguese has gone back to her darker natural hair color and brightened up her wardrobe with a new blue apron. My Laotian now has red and pink themed clothing to choose from. And last but not least, my Taiwanese Bride decided she is really a Chinese Bride at heart.

I would like to thank my cousin Robin and her daughter Meredith, my friend Tracy and all my art collectors for your suggestions, help and input.

Burmese, Myanmar Matryoshka

This is my Burmese, Myanmar Matryoshka. One of my wonderful collectors sent me oodles of photos from her trip to Myanmar to help inspire me. It was so helpful! Such a beautiful culture! She also shared this helpful explanation (loosely quoted), "Thanaka is a paste made out of powdered boxwood. It is considered almost a national make-up. It is slightly astringent and protects against heat and sun. It is worn by children and women on the face and neck and sometimes arms as well." And, once I completed the drawing and showed her she said, "I love how you worked in the thanaka idea with your signature flower." I love receiving info. on the cultures you suggest and your feedback!! Please keep it coming! :)

Just a reminder: Come March, I am changing all Matryoshka print listings in my shop to one listing for each culture/nationality. French, Arles, Provence Matryoshka

Hello! I hope you are having a wonderful day. It is snowing buckets here!

I have listed in my shop my latest Matryoshka, my French, Arles, Provence Matryoshka! I have had many requests for France and from so many different beautiful cultures within France. So this is my first and I will leave the others on my suggestions list to draw at a future date. You can see this French culture and many others in images I found around the web and pinned to a board here.

Beginning with this French Matryoshka, I am changing all Matryoshka listings in my shop to one listing for each culture/nationality. To choose which size you want to purchase look to the right of the listing where it has the name, price, and "Quantity", under those is "Size".
