Babushka Sneak Peek

This is a sneak peek at the latest series of nesting doll drawings I'm working on. This series of illustrations is inspired by 3 different cultures from 3 very different parts of the world that all use similar colors in their traditional costumes. They are inspired by Peruvian, Tibetan and Portuguese cultures. I have always admired the bright colors of these cultures. My Grandparents lived in Portugal for a time and my Grandmother gave me a black apron she bought while she was there. I have always loved all the colorful embroidery on it. I'll have to photograph it and the red one my Mom has and post here later.

I drew the Peruvian and the Portuguese girls first and am now still tinkering with the Tibetan girls colors. When I'm finished I will post again, along with a link where they will be available.

The plan is to do a second series of toy animals from these same cultures too.

Yay! I have finally sorted out my issues getting on to your blog! My new laptop didn't fix the problem, we had to get a new router too.
These are WONDERFUL!!! It's a perfect melding of your eye for pattern and your command of facial expressions. Love them. So pretty and bright on this rainy day.

You're absolutely right, the colors are so fascinating! I love the fact that you show your love for different cultures in your work. No ethnocentrism here!

I bet you'll sell a ton of these!

Wow. These are absolutely stunning--with such great detail, as always. I love them! I'm impressed by your level of research. Nice, crisp designs!

These are lovely and bursting with the usual Amy Perrotti charm. You are so talented!

I'm hoping you will do an ancient Chinese costume version (pre Qing dynasty), in the hanfu clothing, not the frog button stuff the Manchurians forced the population to wear. *crosses fingers*

Thank you Ren!!
For this group I used the same design motif for each (the flower, the leaves, the swirl) to create some continuity between the pieces. But, what fun it would be to do a HanFu style doll and incorporate some traditional Chinese symbols. I would need to research the origins of some of the symbols though to see when they began. You are full of good ideas aren't you!

Thank you Yasmin! I didn't know you were in Portugal. I should have asked you to take a look to see if I was on the right track. Very happy she meets your approval. And thanks for sharing. :)
